About me
Dr. A. Omar Abubaker, DMD, PhD is a graduate of the School of Dental Medicine, School of Dentistry, University of Pittsburgh. He also completed his residency training and a fellowship in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from Presbyterian University Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He has been on the Faculty at VCU School of Dentistry and VCU Medical Center since 1991. He is certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Abubaker currently serves as Professor and Chairman of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, VCU School of Dentistry; Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery, VCU School of Medicine. He maintains a busy private practice in oral and maxillofacial surgery and is actively involved in the
teaching of dental and medical students and oral and maxillofacial surgery residents. Dr. Abubaker is active in education in the areas of addiction, the opioid epidemic, and pain management. In 2015, he earned a Graduate Certificate in Addiction Studies from the International Program in Addiction Studies, jointly administered by Virginia Commonwealth University, The University of Adelaide, Australia and Kings College London, England.
Dr. Abubaker co-authored two oral and maxillofacial surgery textbooks, over 100 chapters and over 50 peer-reviewed scientific articles, as well as numerous abstracts and scientific presentations. He has presented to over 100 local, regional, and national organizations on the topics of the opioid epidemic, addiction, and postoperative pain management in dental, oral, and facial settings. He also implemented changes in the oral surgery curriculum at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry to include scientific information on substance use disorders and safe prescribing after dental procedures
He has appeared in many local and national media and testified before the US Senate in Washington. DC. He received numerous local and national educational and service awards for his service and education on the issues of the opioid epidemic and substance use disorders.
During the past couple of years, Dr. Abubaker has extended his service by becoming the NIH/NIDCR Member of the Data and Safety Monitoring Board (DSMB) for the study of more effective and safe postoperative dental pain management methods. He is also part of a recent proposal for multicenter research to study practical and safe pain management following the extraction of wisdom teeth. He also joined the Board of Directors of 2 End the Stigma, a non-profit organization to provide education, guidance, and resources to end the stigma associated Board of Directors of 2 End the Stigma, a non-profit organization to provide education, guidance, and resources to end the stigma associated with substance use disorder. He also serves on the Board of Directors of True Recovery United. This non-profit organization provides outreach, support, education, guidance, and resources to individuals struggling with substance use disorders.
